Our Under 20s finished the game with nine men and suffered a disappointing 4-0 defeat against local rivals Albion Rovers Under 20s at Excel Group Stadium in our fourth league game of the season.
For the game coach Hugo Faria handed goalkeeper Callum Kinvig (who had been on the bench for the first team at the weekend against Alloa) his first start of the season in place of apprentice Matthew Kerr who is suffering from an illness whilst Albion Rovers fielded a strong starting eleven which included starts for first team players Kyle Turnbull, Gary Fisher and Kevin McCann.
After a slow start to the game Albion Rovers had the first chance of it on the 13th minute when Connor Shields hit a shot from inside the box but the ball went wide and eight minutes later our Under 20s picked up their first booking of the night as Calvin Cowie was yellow carded for a late challenge. Then on the 26th minute Albion Rovers had the games second chance when a corner was won as from it the ball was crossed into the box and Callum Kinvig failed to catch the ball and this led to Anthony McGlone turning the ball into an empty net to give them a 1-0 lead.
On the 29th minute Albion Rovers Kyle Turnbull picked up a yellow card for a late challenge and we were forced to make our first substitution as Conor Bell had to come off injured after picking up a knock earlier in the game and this meant midfielder Cameron Russell came on in an unfamiliar left back position and six minutes later things got worse for our young Diamonds as Conor McLaughlin was shown a straight red card for dissent. Then with only two minutes of the half remaining Dean Cairns picked up a yellow card for a reckless challenge and a minute later Albion Rovers had the final chance of the half when a free kick was won as from it the ball was crossed into the box and not cleared by our defence and this led to young first team player Paul Archibald turning the ball into the net to ensure we headed into half time losing 2-0.
The half got off to a disastrous start for our Under 20s as after only eight minutes of it Dean Cairns was sent off after he picked up a second yellow card for a foul inside the box which resulted in Stranraer winning a penalty and Ross Stewart taking it however Callum Kinvig guessed the correct way and made the save to keep us in the contest. Albion Rovers refused to let this get to them and killed the game off within the next seven minutes as Gary Fisher and Ross Stewart both got on the score sheet to give them a 4-0 lead.
Before the next chance both teams made substitutions and we brought Scott Thomson and Jordan Duncan on for Ciaran Reilly and James Daly and also Robbie Leighton picked up a yellow card for a foul and then on 74th minute Albion Rovers had the chance when they hit a shot from the top of the box but Callum Kinvig made the save. There was still time left for Gary Fisher and substitute Liam McGuigan to have chances for Albion Rovers but neither of them were able to increase the lead and our Under 20s lost the game 4-0.
