Our Under 20s suffered a 4-0 defeat against Stranraer Under 20s at Ravenscraig in our fifth league game of the season.
For the game coach Hugo Faria fielded a young line up due to injuries and suspensions and this meant Under 17s goalkeeper Michael McGee and midfielder Ewan McGuinness were both handed starts whilst Stranraer included experienced first team duo Frank McKeown and Christian Nade in their starting eleven.
Stranraer started the game brightest and had the first chance on the 4th minute when a corner that was crossed to the back post fell to Kieran McLaughlin as he hit a shot but the ball went over the bar and seven minutes later our young Diamonds had their first chance when apprentice Scott Thomson hit a shot from inside the box but Stranraer goalkeeper Max Currie saved the ball with his legs. Shortly after this Stranraer had the games next chance when they won a free kick at the edge of the box as from it Evan Maley hit a curling shot but Michael McGee got down low to excellently parry the ball away to safety however this was only to be a warning to Airdrie as on the 18th minute the ball was crossed into the box and Christian Nade controlled the ball and turned and fired a shot by Michael McGee and into the back of the net to give them a 1-0 lead.
Before the next chance Ewan McGuinness picked up a yellow card for our Under 20s for a reckless challenge on the 20th minute and five minutes later Scott Thomson had our second chance of the game when he hit a shot from inside the box but the ball went flying high over the bar. Stranraer went onto dominate the remainder of the half and had two chances through Kieran McLaughlin and one through Mitchell Ewing and from them Kieran McLaughlin scored one of his on the 38th minute which meant we headed into half time losing 2-0.
After a slow start to the half our young Diamonds had the first chance of it on the 57th minute when Ciaran Reilly nipped in on goal after a Stranraer defender had given away possession cheaply and with only Max Currie to beat he hit a shot but Max excellently made a save to keep Stranraer's two goal lead intact. Then on the 64th minute Stranraer made their first two substitutions as Adam Kirkwood and Mark Curragh came on for injured Mitchell Ewing and for Andy Sibbald and three minutes later Stranraer had a chance when fullback Jack Sherrie hit a shot from the top of the box but the ball went harmlessly wide.
On the 71st minute Airdrie made their first substitution as Under 17s midfielder Callum Hollands came on for Robbie Leighton who had picked up an injury but two minutes later Stranraer had another chance when Evan Maley hit a shot from inside the box but the ball went wide. Then on the 76th minute Stranraer made their final substitution as Dean Fulton came on for Christian Nade however four minutes later our Under 20s came within inches of getting back into the game as from about 30 yards out Ciaran Reilly hit a powerful shot which had Max Currie beaten but the ball rattled the bar and bounced down into Max Curries arms.
With eight minutes of the game remaining our young Diamonds made their final substitution as Under 17s defender Ewan Gartshore came on for apprentice Craig Truesdale however it was Stranraer who went onto finish the game strongly and with three chances they hit the post once and scored the other two which meant we lost the game 4-0.
