  Queen's Park 1:2 Airdrieonians 17th October 2016
  Arran Ross

Our Under 20s produced a terrific hard working team performance at Lesser Hampden to win 2-1 in the sixth league game of the season.

For the game coach Hugo Faria fielded a strong lineup which included starts for first team squad players Sean McIntosh and Kevin Schmidt whilst the Queens Park starting lineup included first team players Bryan Wharton and former Airdrie player Josh Watt.

Queens Park started the game brightest and on the 5th minute had the first chance when Joseph Manderson hit a shot from the top of the box but Airdrie's Trialist goalkeeper Tony Sharkey parried the ball away to safety and seven minutes later he was called into action again when Billy Mortimer hit a curling shot from the same distance but Tony Sharkey saved again to deny Queens Park. Then on the 21st minute Queens Park were forced to make their first substitution as Joseph Manderson went off injured and this meant Marcus Connolly came on however four minutes later our young Diamonds had their first chance when a free kick was won as from it Cameron Russell sent a fantastic cross to the back post and defender Arran Ross rose high above his marker to get his head onto it and send the ball flying by Queens Park goalkeeper Owen Stott and into the back of the net to give us a 1-0 lead.

The games next chance wasn't until the 34th minute and it was for Queens Park when they won a corner as from it the ball was crossed into the box and only cleared as far as Billy Mortimer and he hit a shot but the ball went flying over the bar and five minutes later our Under 20s had a chance when Cameron Russell hit an am ambitious shot from about 25 yards out but Owen Stott brilliantly flew through the air to turn the ball behind and from the resulting corner no danger was caused. There was still time left in the half for one more chance and it was for Queens Park on the 43rd minute when Josh Watt hit a curling shot but the ball went over the bar to ensure we would head into half time winning 1-0.

Before the half began Queens Park made their second substitution as Calvin McGrory came on for James McKernon however only one minute after the restart Airdrie should have doubled the lead as from a cross into the box Kevin Schmidt flicked the ball on and from a few yards out James Daly had an empty net to aim for but his header went wide. Shortly after this Queens Park had their first chance of the half when Marcus Connolly hit a shot from inside the box but the ball went wide and then on the 56th minute they had another chance when a free kick was won about 25 yards from goal as from it Bryan Wharton hit a shot and the ball went flying over Tony Sharkey and into the top corner of the net to give him no chance and make it 1-1.

Our Under 20s responded to conceding positively and went in search of another goal and on the 63rd minute Kevin Schmidt had a chance when he excellently controlled a terrific Connor Scullion cross and from inside the box he tucked the ball by Owen Stott and into the back of the net to give us a 2-1 lead and nine minutes later Kevin Schmidt had another chance when he hit a shot from a difficult angle inside the box but the ball went into the side netting. Before the next chance our young Diamonds midfielder Jordan Duncan picked up a yellow card and we made our first two substitutions as Ewan McGuinness and Scott Thomson came on for Jordan Duncan and Cameron Russell and then on the 88th minute Connor Scullion had the chance when he went on a powerful run from his own half to the top of the box beating a number of Queens Park players and hit a shot but Owen Stott got down low to make the safe to keep them in the game.

There was still time left in the game for both teams to have one chance and James Daly had our Under 20s last one when he hit a curling shot but Owen Stott made the save we then made our final substitution as Ciaran Reilly came on for Kevin Schmidt. During stoppage time Queens Park had their chance when they hit a shot from inside the box which looked destined for the back of the net but Tony Sharkey got down low to pull off a tremendous save and turn the ball over the bar to ensure our young Diamonds won 2-1 and got a first league win of the season.
