Our Under 20s suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat against Queen of the South Under 20s at Ravenscraig in the seventh league game of the season.
For the game first team head coach Kevin McBride fielded a strong lineup which included starts for first team squad players Sean McIntosh and Kevin Schmidt whilst Queen of the South fielded a young starting lineup which included hot prospect Owen Moxon.
After a slow start to the game our young Diamonds had the first chance of it on the 21st minute when Kevin Schmidt controlled the ball from a cross into the box and turned and hit a shot but Queen of the South goalkeeper Jack Leighfield made the save and two minutes later Queen of the South had their first chance when a free kick was won about 25 yards from goal as from it Owen Moxon hit a curling shot but the ball went harmlessly over the bar.
Both teams continued to search for the opening goal and on the 25th minute Queen of the South had the games next chance when Ross Ferguson beat Airdrie goalkeeper Matthew Kerr to a through ball and he excellently lifted the ball over him and into the back of the net to give Queen of the South a 1-0 lead. Our Under 20s responded with a chance on the 33rd minute when Conor Scullion hit a shot from about 20 yards out but the ball went over the bar and nine minutes later we were forced to make our first substitution as Robbie Leighton had to come off ill and this meant Jordan Duncan came on however there was no more chances in the half and we headed into half time losing 1-0.
Before the half began Airdrie had to make their second substitution as James Daly had to come off ill and this meant young striker Scott Thomson came on however it was Queen of the South who had the first chance of the half when they won a corner on the 47th minute as from it the ball was crossed into the box and a header was sent goal wards which had Matthew Kerr beaten but luckily for our young Diamonds Jordan Duncan was on the line to head the ball clear. Shortly after this out Under 20s had a great chance to equalise when Kevin Schmidt knocked a terrific Craig Truesdale cross down into the path of an unmarked Scott Thomson a few yards from goal and he hit a shot but the ball rattled the post and bounced away to safety.
Airdrie continued to search for a way back into the game and on the 51st minute Conor Scullion had a go from inside the box but Jack Leighfield excellently turned the ball behind and from the resulting corner the ball was crossed into the box and Sean McIntosh got away from his marker to get onto it with a powerful header and the ball flew by Jack Leighfield and into the back of the net for the equaliser. Queen of the South responded positively to conceding and on the 53rd minute had a chance when they won a throw in as from it the ball was launched into the box and an unmarked Owen Moxon got onto the end of it with a header which flew by Matthew Kerr and into the back of the net to give them the lead for the second time in the game.
Our Under 20s went in search of a goal to get back into the game and on the 55th minute had a chance when Conor Scullion hit a shot from the top of the box but the ball went over the bar and a few minutes later Airdrie's Jordan Duncan and a Queen of the South player picked yellow cards for an off the ball incident . Shortly after this Queen of the South had the games next chance when they launched another long throw into the box and this time the ball ended up with Ryan Nelson and he turned it into the back of the net to give them a 3-1 lead.
Queen of the South continued to create chances and had ones through Connor Murray, Rhys Evans and Owen Moxon but none of them would find the net. Then on the 70th minute our young Diamonds made their final substitution as Ewan McGuinness came on for Arran Ross and ten minutes later Kevin Schmidt had our final chance of the game when he hit a shot from a few yards out but Jack Leighfield made the save and we lost the game 3-1 to complete the first third of the season.
