Despite a good performance our Under 20s were held to a 0-0 draw at Ravenscraig against Clyde Under 20s in our ninth league game of the season.
For the game coach Donald Jennow included first team squad players James Daly, Kevin Schmidt and on loan Hamilton Accies player Conor Scullion in the starting eleven whilst Clyde fielded a young line up which included Ronan Sweeney who was on the substitutes bench for the first team at the weekend.
Airdrie started the game brightly and during the opening minute of it had a strong penalty appeal for a foul on Kevin Schmidt turned down and six minutes later Conor Scullion came within inches of giving us the lead when his shot on the volley from inside the box rattled the post and bounced away to safety. Shortly after this our young Diamonds had the games next chance when a free kick was won as from it Conor Scullion crossed the ball into the box and Arran Ross got onto the end of it with a header goal wards but the ball went over the bar and two minutes later Clyde had their first chance of the game when they hit a shot from about 25 yards out however Airdrie goalkeeper Matthew Kerr parried the ball away and from the rebound they sent another shot goal wards which beat Matthew Kerr but defender Dean Cairns was on the line to clear the ball away to safety.
Both teams continued to have chances and our Under 20s had the next one on the 15th minute when James Daly hit a shot from about 20 yards out but the ball went over the bar and four minutes later Clyde had a chance when they hit a shot from the top of the box but the ball went harmlessly wide. Both teams then cancelled one another out and the next chance wasn't until the 40th minute for Airdrie when Kevin Schmidt hit a shot from inside the box but it lacked power and was saved by Clyde's Trialist A goalkeeper and Clyde responded with the final three chances of the half but none of them could be converted into goals and the teams headed into half time drawing 0-0.
Nine minutes after the restart our young Diamonds midfielder Calvin Cowie picked up a yellow card for a foul and from the resulting free kick Clyde had the first chance of the half as they hit a shot from about 30 yards out but the ball went flying high over the bar. Both teams then made substitutions before the next chance as Clyde brought Divine Shanganya, Euan McMillan and former Airdrie Under 17s player Michael McGinty on for Arron Millar, Trialist B and Matthew Edward whilst Airdrie brought Ciaran Reilly and Cameron Russell on for Kevin Schmidt and Robbie Leighton and then on the 78th minute Clyde's Ronan Sweeney picked up a yellow card for a foul on Matthew Kerr.
Our young Diamonds went onto finish the game strongly and on the 82nd minute had a chance when Ciaran Reilly hit a curling shot from the top of the box but Clyde's Trialist A goalkeeper made the save and shortly after this Ciaran Reilly picked up a yellow card for dissent. There was still time left for our Under 20s to have two chances and they came from shots by Cameron Russell and Conor Scullion but both attempts were off target and the game finished in a frustrating 0-0 draw.
