  Airdrieonians 0:4 Ayr United 26th November 2016

  Robbie Leighton

The second third of the league campaign got off to a bad start at Ravenscraig as Ayr United Under 20s inflicted a 4-0 defeat on our young Diamonds in the eighth league game of the season.

For the game coach Donald Jennow fielded a strong lineup which included starts for first team squad players James Daly and Kevin Schmidt whilst Ayr United's starting eleven included first team back up goalkeeper Jordan Hart.

Ayr started the game at an electrifying pace and after seven minutes of it found themselves 2-0 up thanks to two goals from Sean McKenzie. Our Under 20s responded with the games next chance on the 20th minute when Robbie Leighton hit a shot from the top of the box but the ball went harmlessly over the bar and within the next six minutes Ayr United's James Hilton and Leon Murphy both scored goals to give them a 4-0 lead. There was only to be one more chance in the half and it came for Airdrie when we won an indirect free kick as from it the ball was passed back to Robbie Leighton and he hit a shot but the ball went wide and we headed into half time losing 4-0.

Ayr started the half strongly and on the 52nd minute Sean McKenzie had the first chance of it when he hit a curling shot from the top of the box but the ball went wide. Before the next chance both teams made substitutions as our young Diamonds brought Cameron Russell and Ciaran Reilly on for Scott Thomson and Kevin Schmidt and Ayr brought Maclean Simpson and Ryan Connolly on for James Hilton and Sean McKenzie and on the 63rd minute Conor Bell had our only chance of the half when he hit ambitious shot from about 25 yards out but the ball went high and wide.

Ayr continued to search for goals and had the games next chance when Luke McCowan hit a shot from the top of the box but the ball went wide and shortly after this both teams made their final substitutions as Jordan Duncan came on for an injured James Daly for Airdrie and as Jamie Martin came on for Leon Murphy for Ayr. As the game continued Airdrie went down to ten men as Calvin Cowie had to come off with an injury and Ayr had three chances but one was off target and the other two were saved by our young Diamonds goalkeeper Matthew Kerr and we lost the game 4-0.
