AIRDRIE manager Jimmy Boyle is hoping Phil Johnston's double against Dumbarton sparks a goal rush.

The Diamonds defeated the Sons 3-0 at New Broomfield on Saturday with winger Johnston bagging a brace.

Boyle has told the former Celtic player that he expects to see his name on the scoresheet regularly this term.

​

And he admitted the burden of finding the back of the net doesn't sit solely on the shoulders of the strikers.

​

He said: "I've spoken to Phil and told him he hasn't scored enough goals; last season he got two.

​

"But we've talked to the wide boys and said that if one has the chance to cross, the other has to get to the back post."

​

The manager refused to get carried away with Airdrie's success in their Second Division opener and believes the division is anybody's for the taking.

​

However, Boyle was satisfied with the performance of his side and especially happy with another clean sheet after keeping Stirling Albion at bay in the Scottish Communities League Cup seven days earlier.

​

He added: "We've seen some of the other results. Teams that are expected to be challenging have lost and that proves this is a league where everyone can beat anyone on their day.

​

"Clean sheets were a big issue for us last season so we're pleased to now have two in a row. Big David Lilley has been good for Kieron Stallard's progress and the two of them were great on Saturday."
