New Youth Teams unveiled
16th August 2011
Airdrie United’s continued commitment to Youth Football has been strengthened with the addition of two new youth teams into Scottish Football’s Youth Initiative Programme.
This vibrant programme is geared to meet the needs of our young talented players. Players taking part in the Scottish Football Youth Initiative programme have aspirations to play at a professional level.
The partnership between the Scottish FA, Scottish Football League and Scottish Premier League has been developing for some years now and the addition of the two teams is seen as a continued step in the process of having a complete youth structure throughout the age groups.
Our U14s & U15s have been formed with the core of both squads coming from the successful boys clubs currently affiliated to the club and the investment, which has seen the club meet the entry criteria, is seen as a long term strategy that will ensure local talent can be developed for the 1st team.
Youth coach Liam Brindle is excited about the prospect of facing Scottish Football League sides on a weekly basis and said “The club - through the achievements of our under 19s in recent years and youth players graduating to the 1st team - have enhanced our standing in the ranks of youth football and we hope that we can build on this and produce players that one day will feature for the Diamonds.
"Jimmy has been terrific in his support of the two teams and the time he’s spent with the boys has enforced the belief that youth football at the club features high on the list of priorities.”
With the opening fixtures of the season starting on Sunday 21st August the two squads are being put through their paces at training sessions at Excelsior Stadium where they will also play their home games.
