Marc Warren interview

30th December 2012

THE SCOTTISH DECEMBER IS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT TO AUSTRALIA!
Completely different! The weather is absolutely freezing; it’s a good change, especially at this time of year. With the snow and everything it’s a big change from back home where it’s warm and you’re on the beach instead of in the house having Christmas with the family.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO FOOTBALL RATHER THAN RUGBY OR CRICKET?
My dad’s from Coventry so he was a footballer when he was younger, and he moved to Australia. My mum’s a rugby league girl so she wanted me to play that but dad kind of overruled her and said I was going to play football (or soccer as we call it back home).

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO THE UK?
I started off going through the youth ranks back home and I got signed on my first professional contract by Central Coast Mariners. I was there for about a year and Sheffield United spotted me, they’ve got connections with Central Coast, and invited me over for a little trial. So I came over, did really well, and they signed me on a two year deal. Once my deal was up I came to Airdrie.

HOW DID THE MOVE TO AIRDRIE COME ABOUT?
My agent knows Jimmy Boyle quite well, so I came over for a little training session and enjoyed myself.

DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE SETTLED IN WELL?
Yeah, I’ve settled in really well. At the start it was a bit shaky not knowing anyone; but where I am now in Glasgow I’m quite close to a lot of the boys there so I’ve made friends with a lot of them.

YOU’D ONLY KNOWN HIM A SHORT TIME, BUT WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF KIERON’S MOVE TO AUSTRALIA?
It’s good for him, you know? He’s a young boy and it’s good to get experience in another country.

HOW DOES THE STANDARD COMPARE TO AUSTRALIA (AND SHEFFIELD)?
Obviously Sheffield’s playing in League One so it’s really quick; but the standard here’s really good too. As long as it’s first team football, that level is good at any age really. You can adapt to everything.

HOW DO YOU FEEL THE TEAM HAVE DONE THIS SEASON?
Ups and downs really. We’ve played really well the last couple of weeks but it’s that final touch that we’ve struggled with. There have been a few defensive errors here and there but we’re beginning to get there.

ARE YOU SURPRISED AT HOW COMPETITIVE THE LEAGUE IS?
I didn’t know much about Scottish football, but it’s a bit different because there’s not many teams in the league and you play each other quite a lot so you get to know each club.
