Auction for Sammy
29th August 2014
Following the sad passing of former Airdrieonians hero Sammy Conn last week, another Diamonds legend has made a tremendous gesture in his memory.
Ex-goalkeeper John Martin has placed his 1992 Scottish Cup Runners-Up medal up for auction to raise funds for Ayrshire Hospice, where Sammy spent the final months of his life as he battled Motor Neuron Disease.
Both players were renowned for wearing their heart on their sleeve when they pulled on the Airdrie jersey, and goalie John was keen to help out following the passing of his former team-mate.
The 92 Cup Final was one of two which Johnny played in for the Club, and the side were unlucky to lose out 2-1 to Rangers on the day.
Towards the end of a colourful 19-year career for the Diamonds, John had a testimonial evening which was attended by Hollywood star Robert Duvall, who had appeared alongside him in 'A Shot At Glory'.
On the night, John gave his medal to supporter Iain Allison, who would only accept the gift on a temporary basis. Iain recently reminded John that he still had the medal on a loan and John thought of the auction to raise funds for Sammy's hospice.
The eBay auction can be found here.
Please bid generously for the chance to not only own a priceless piece of Airdrieonians memorabilia, but to help out the Hospice which provided care for Sammy.
