A fitting tribute to a very special man

29th September 2014

The Under 20s lost out on penalties in the SFA Youth Cup yesterday, and while that was disappointing, the performance and spirit would have made a very special man very happy.

Mr David Nicol was an Airdrie fan for over 80 years and a season ticket holder until his sad passing in August this year.

Although needing a wheelchair in the last couple of seasons, he attended the games accompanied by his good friends Tom Hamilton and Stuart McCulloch.

As usual he sent his daughter up to buy his season ticket the first week they went on sale.

Sadly he passed away before the first home league game. The Club contacted his daughter to arrange the return of his ticket money but she was adamant that the money stay in the Club as she was sure that was what her Dad would have wanted.

As Mr Nicol was keen on the young players coming through, we decided to us this money on Sunday. We arranged to take the Under 20s for breakfast prior to the cup tie at Falkirk. As there is no funding for this age group at all, we are not usually able to do this type of thing so it was a rare experience for them.

The final result might not have been what we hoped for but Coaches Stephen Findlay and James Grant were immensely proud of the performance as Manager Gary Bollan watched on.

We like to think that Mr Nicol was just as proud and our thank go to his family for this kind gesture.
