Diamonds back NHS tobacco campaign
7th December 2016
Airdrieonians FC are delighted to announce a partnership launch with NHS Lanarkshire to support the Tobacco Awareness Programme and raise awareness of the dangers of second hand smoke.
The club’s mascot Rocky the Rooster and Jenny’s Bear (NHS Lanarkshire’s Second Hand Smoke awareness raising mascot) are fronting a campaign to encourage fans and visitors to become role models for children against tobacco and encourage them to make their homes and cars smoke free zones.
Airdrieonians club captain Marc Fitzpatrick said “We feel very passionate about the health and fitness, not only of our team, coaches and staff but also the whole Airdrie community and we strongly believe that the football club is a great platform to promote the health benefits of protecting children from second hand smoke, preventing them from starting and for stopping smoking”.
Second hand smoking means breathing in other people’s tobacco smoke and or the smoke from a burning tip of a cigarette. Second hand smoke can linger in the air for up to five hours even after a cigarette is extinguished. Most of it is invisible, you can’t see it or smell it, and it is harmful to everyone’s health including your pets.
As recently announced, from 5th December 2016, a person smoking in a car which is carrying passengers aged 18 or under will be breaking the law, and could face a £100 fixed penalty fine.
Stop Smoking Nurse Advisor Elizabeth Dickson said “It is never too late to stop smoking and has so many benefits to you and your family’s health and well-being; not to mention the benefits which come from not spending money on cigarettes”
If you would like to stop smoking come along and meet the NHS Lanarkshire Stop Smoking Team in Airdrie Health Centre on a:
Wednesday afternoon at 1.30 p.m. (Level 3, Boardroom)
Thursday evening at 6.00 p.m. (Level 1, Locality Room)
We are friendly and understanding and provide free treatment and specialist support and have helped over 17,000 people quit in Lanarkshire. If this doesn’t suit call us on 0300 303 0242.
