Elton John announces Excelsior show

12th September 2016

2016 has been a vintage year for Elton John; he released his 33rd studio album Wonderful Crazy Night to rapturous applause, and wowed audiences across the UK with his epic live show, which culminated in a headline performance last weekend at Hyde Park in London for BBC Radio 2. Next week (18th September) he will also perform at the annual Apple Music Festival.

From Longleat to Leicester, Edinburgh to Exeter, Elton John brought his unmistakable showmanship to the stage. The Guardian exclaimed how the Meadowbank Stadium show was “a hit parade of peerless pomp”, with the Herald observing “the maestro's unbridled raison d'etre of showbiz classicist...sits somewhere between Liberace and Mozart”.

It was no different at the Lincolnshire Showground, where The Lincolnshire Echo simply declared, “when Sir Elton John came to Lincoln, Lincoln had one wonderful, crazy night”. In Liverpool, the Echo observed, “every song was note perfect, packed with the kind of energy that belies his years”

Now fans in Lanarkshire can look forward to what will be one of the music events of the year as Elton John announces a show at Airdrie Excelsior Stadium on 24th June, as part of his worldwide Wonderful Crazy Night Tour. Taking to the stage, Elton will perform songs from his latest studio album ‘Wonderful Crazy Night’, as well as his most-loved hits from his stellar career.

On having Elton coming to perform, Excelsior Stadium owner Paul Hetherington and Tom Wotherspoon, owner of Airdrieonians FC said: ‘This is a major coup for the club, stadium, town and surrounding areas. To have secured Airdrie FC’s ground as the only Scottish venue of Sir Elton John’s 2017 UK tour is something we should all take pride in. That a truly global superstar has chosen to come here can only benefit the club, stadium and local economy as fans of Elton’s from far and wide will descend on our town and our stadium. We have spoken with North Lanarkshire Council leader Jim Logue and we know the Council is delighted. This will be a night to remember for all of us. Indeed, a wonderful, crazy night in our town.’

The show will be extra special as it’s Elton’s first ever performance in Lanarkshire.

Elton has a long history of paving the way to bring music to new areas across Scotland, including Kilmarnock in 2005, Inverness in 2007, Perth in 2008 and Falkirk in 2012.

An unmistakable name in the history of popular music, Elton John has done it all – and then some. From being awarded multiple Grammys and BRITs, and even an Oscar and a Tony Award, Elton has proven his universal acclaim. In addition to selling more than 250 million records worldwide, through his partnership with lyricist Tim Rice Elton wrote the music for the feature film and Broadway stage production of ‘The Lion King”.

Elton John has over 4,000 performances to his credit since launching his first tour in 1970. Having performed at several of the world’s most recognisable venues – including a pair of residencies at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Elton continues to be one of this country’s biggest pop-culture exports.
