Diamonds get Ayr in third round

18th August 2016

Kevin McBride is looking for a repeat of last season's final game when Airdrie travel to Somerset Park for the Irn Bru third round tie against Ayr United.

A trip to face the Honest Men is the Diamonds' reward for despatching Motherwell U20s on Tuesday night, and Head Coach McBride is looking forward to a challenging tie.

"It's a tough one. We got a great result down there at the end of last season, but obviously with a totally different team.

"We know it's a difficult place to go, there's not many teams would like to go down there - but it's one we'll look forward to."

United were promoted to the Championship after winning the play-off final on penalty kicks against Saturday's opponents Stranraer, and have strengthened considerably with big signings like former Dundee star Gary Harkins.

The tie will be played on Sunday September 4 due to the Scottish International Air Show taking place in Prestwick on the Saturday.
