Academy welcome stateside visitors
April 14, 2018
Over the past few weeks, across a quiet Easter period in terms of Academy football, Airdrieonians continued to build on their growing reputation by playing a number of friendlies against touring teams from the United States of America.
They partnered up with Worldstrides Excel Sports to play seven fixtures across a range of age groups, with some games being hosted at the Excelsior Stadium.
Robin Wood, the Regional Operations Coordinator for Worldstrides, had this to say on the recent set of games: “Worldstrides Excel Programs take teams from North America around the world to challenge new opponents, boost skills and gain lifetime experiences.
"Excel serves youth clubs, high schools and Olympic development teams through customised sports tours, tournaments and competitive events. These programmes empower athletes of all ages to unite through camaraderie and competition.
"We are delighted to have formed a great relationship with Airdrieonians Football Club. I must say a special thanks to Scott Black, one of the Academy Coaches who, over the last four weeks has organised a total of seven games against various visiting teams. The visiting American teams have all loved the experience, especially those who had the opportunity to play at the Excelsior Stadium, and I am sure Airdrie have now gained a few more Diamonds across the pond!
"We hope moving forward that we can build on this relationship, and with the help and support of Scott, many more of our visiting teams will have the opportunity to sample the hospitality of Airdrieonians FC.”
Academy coach Scott added: "This is a fantastic opportunity for our boys to experience playing against players from a different football culture.
"Many of the players that our boys came up against were technically very good and their fitness was levels were excellent, so it was a real test and challenge for the teams.
"To play seven games across the Academy was only possible with the help and support of the other coaches so it was a real team effort, and hopefully building on the success of the last four weeks we will be able to grow this relationship with Worldstrides and host many more games in the future, helping to grow Airdrie‘s reputation."
