At half-time in tomorrow's Monklands derby match, Airdrieonians Community Club will take to the pitch to present the youngsters who hope to play a big part in the Diamonds future.

The club was founded in July 2016 as Airdrieonians FC Boys Club and had initially two age groups; kids born in 2008 and 2009. 

 

The first training session was on a public park and had eight kids in attendance and there were only four balls between them - within weeks that number had expanded as many kids from the area want to play for their local team. Both squads took shape and through hard work and plenty of practice, both performed well in their respective games throughout the season. 

 

In January 2017 following a successful end to the year, the club expanded to incorporate a further two age groups, kids born in 2010 and 2011. 

 

At this stage the club boasted an impressive 70 boys and girls who play in the Central Lanarkshire League. 

 

The club, who are aligned with Airdrieonians FC, under SFA guidance changed their name to Airdrieonians Community Club in July 2017. 

 

Since then it has grown from strength to strength and further expanded to encompass kids born in 2012 as well as having its very own girls team with age ranging from 2008-2010. In December this year the club will again grow and will have teams with kids born in 2006 and 2007 - at this point there will be an incredible 150+ kids representing Airdrieonians Community Club.

 

The club will be taking more than 50 kids to Craig Tara to play in the ESF Festival for the second year running in April next year. They recently spread the Diamonds' good name when they visited Old Trafford, Etihad and St. James Park stadiums, leaving scarfs and pennants behind. 

 

Recently the club achieved its quality mark which will not only benefit the Community Club but will enhance the Academy as well the first team and club as whole. With support from local businesses and parents, the club will continue to grow. 

 

John Truesdale, coach of the Community Club’s 2009 side, told airdriefc.com: “The Community Club as a whole feel fortunate to work with and be part of our local football club, and we're happy to be attending tomorrow’s derby match.

 

“We’re delighted to present almost all of the players within the Community Club at half time. There will be a small sided game as well as kids hitting penalties, and we hope that the fans will see the talent and offer some support to the future of their club.”
