Dean Cairns was disappointed with Airdrie’s managerial departure, but the midfielder knows it’s time for he and his team-mates to make a good impression.

 

Stevie Findlay left the Diamonds hot seat by mutual consent last week after a home defeat to Brechin City, and Cairns is sad to see his old gaffer go.

 

“Personally, I’m pretty gutted. I’ve known Stevie a long long time, he brought me here and he’s made me a better player. I’ve got a lot to thank him for.

 

“Obviously results haven’t been great, we know that, but we just need to get on with it. Football can be a fickle sport.”

 

With the Airdrie board inviting applications for the managerial position, first team matters have been left in the hands of Marc Fitzpatrick and David Proctor. Cairns is happy with the continuity.

 

“Nothing’s changed in training - Fitzy’s been here a long time and he’s very well respected in the changing room, as is Proc.

 

“Training’s been the same, and we’ve been trying to create a good atmosphere ahead of the game.”

 

As the second quarter of the season gets underway, Airdrie travel to Links Park on league duty for the first time in over 30 years.

 

Stewart Petrie’s Montrose, promoted as League Two champions last season, were 1-0 winners when the sides met at the Penny Cars Stadium in August.

 

Cairns feels the result could be different this time round.

 

“Recent results have been disappointing, but it’s up to us to change that. Everybody’s saying we’ve got a decent squad, but we have to show that.

 

“Montrose beat us in the last game, but it was a pretty poor game in truth, it could have gone either way - so I think this could be a good game for us. 

 

“If we get the ball down and play it’s a good chance for us to get three points and show the fans that we mean business.”

 

As well as the fans, Dean knows that Airdrie’s players will be out to impress their new boss when an appointment is made.

 

“Knowing that a new manager will be coming in can inspire us. It’s a clean slate for everyone now, and we’ll all be looking to impress whoever comes in. If it’s someone who doesn’t know us personally, we need to show them what we’re about.”

 

Marc Fitzpatrick is looking forward to the trip north.

 

“Everybody’s expecting a tough game, Montrose certainly gave us a tough game here. It’s one we’re looking forward to.

 

“There have obviously been changes with Stevie resigning, but I’m hopeful we can get a wee kick from the players and we can put in a good performance.”

 

With the exception of long-term absentee Scott Gallacher, Fitzpatrick and Proctor have a full squad to choose from.
