We are delighted to announce the appointment of Colin Cameron as Airdrieonians assistant manager.

 

The 46-year-old former Scotland international will join the coaching staff on a full-time basis ahead of Saturday’s match against Montrose.

 

Colin has a wealth of experience in the Scottish game, having played for Raith Rovers, Hearts and Dundee among others. The ex-midfielder also had a successful spell down south, turning out for Wolverhampton Wanderers, Coventry City and MK Dons. Representing his country 28 times between 1999 and 2004, Colin scored twice in the dark blue of Scotland.

 

Managerial stints at Cowdenbeath and Berwick Rangers followed, and Colin has most recently been working as a coach with Lowland League side Caledonian Braves, formerly Edusport Academy.

 

As manager Ian Murray’s number one choice to succeed Marc Fitzpatrick, who left the club last week, Colin was delighted to be given the opportunity to join the Diamonds.

 

He told airdriefc.com: “I’m pleased to join the club and I’m looking forward to getting started. It’s a challenge, because there’s a clear ambition here to get up the leagues, so hopefully I can help to get the club moving in the right direction.

 

“I’ll bring enthusiasm and 100% effort to the job, I’ve always put my heart and soul into every job I’ve had whether that’s been playing or coaching. I hope that the demands I put on the players will rub off, and if that means we can get an extra 5 or 10% out of them, that’s great.

 

“I know what’s required to succeed at this level, having won promotion out of this league with Cowdenbeath, and it won’t take me long to get up to speed. There are a lot a good players in the lower leagues - and hopefully I can speak to the manager about one or two that I’m familiar with.

 

“Having spoken to Ian and Stuart, I agree that promotion is the immediate target. If we can get a bit of momentum and a sustained run of results, that breeds confidence and keeps us on the coat-tails of the teams above us - and the longer we can do that, the higher we can aim.”

 

Ian Murray added: “I’m really happy to get Colin in. I’ve known him for a number of years having played against him, managed against him and been in Scotland squads with him.

 

“I was always impressed with what Colin did at Cowdenbeath, and he certainly fits the bill in terms of what we were looking to bring in.”

 

And Director of Football Stuart Millar said: “We’re pleased to welcome Colin to the club and we’re very much looking forward to working with him.

 

“The board of directors continue to show their ambition by bringing Colin in as a full-time assistant, and Ian and I are grateful for their backing. I’d also like to thank Caledonian Braves for allowing Colin to join us.”

 

Colin will join the club after a short family holiday, and we look forward to welcoming him to training on his return before he takes his place in the dug-out as we get back to League One duty on Saturday.
