We are delighted to announce the signing of versatile defender Paul McKay from Cardiff City, subject to international clearance.

The highly-rated 22-year-old primarily features in the centre of defence, but can also play at right-back and in the right or centre of midfield.

Born in Glasgow, McKay’s entire career to date has been played south of the border, with spells at Doncaster Rovers, Leeds United and Cardiff. His brother Jack spent time on loan at Airdrie in 2017, scoring once in 15 appearances.

Paul told airdriefc.com that Jack’s opinion played a part in his decision to join the Diamonds.

“Jack told me about the club, and said it was a great set-up. After speaking to the manager and Stuart Millar, I was delighted to come here.

“Recently I’ve been playing in the centre of the park, but I can play right-back and centre-back as well, and I think the manager quite liked my versatility.”

And Paul has no doubts concerning his ambitions during his time at the Penny Cars Stadium.

“With the squad we’ve got here we should be aiming for the top of the table. Falkirk are the early favourites, so we’re looking to push them as much as we can and hopefully challenge for the title.”

Manager Ian Murray was thrilled to land Paul’s signature.

“Paul’s been training with us for over a week, and we’re very happy that we’ve managed to get him in.

“He’s a tremendous athlete and can play in a number of positions, so he’ll be a big asset for us and we’re delighted to get him.”
