Callum Fordyce has been named as Airdrieonians Players Player of the Year for 2019/20 following a vote by the senior squad.

Centre-back Callum has been ever-present in the Diamonds side this season, playing every minute of every match and putting in consistently reliable performances at the heart of the defence and at right full-back when called upon.

Joining from Queen of the South last summer, 27-year-old Fordyce was immediately appointed as the club’s vice-captain, and struck up an instant partnership with skipper Sean Crighton which played no small part in the Diamonds’ impressive defensive record - the second meanest in the league.

Captaining the side on four occasions, Callum’s leadership qualities have been there for all to see, and his defensive strengths both on the ground and in the air are equalled by his range of passing and ability on the ball.

On being named by his team-mates as their Player of the Year, Callum told airdriefc.com: “From a player’s point of view it’s an important award, because you’re being recognised for your contribution by your fellow professionals.

“We’ve got a great group of boys here and there are a lot of players who would have been in contention, so I’m very grateful for the award.

“It’s disappointing that circumstances mean we’re unable to achieve what we wanted to, but from a personal point of view I feel that I’ve had a decent enough season and it’s pleasing to get recognition from the boys.

“Airdrie is a great club to be at - it’s the best dressing room I’ve ever been in, and that’s a credit to the manager, Stuart Millar and the backroom staff, but I think a lot of credit must go to the players as well. We’ve all stuck together through ups and downs, and it’s been a very enjoyable season.

“It’s probably been the most I’ve ever enjoyed my football throughout my career, so I’m delighted that I got the chance to sign for Airdrie - hopefully we’ll go on to have some success when all of this is over.”

Club captain Sean Crighton added: “Callum and myself have created a really good relationship on and off the park this season, and I don’t mind admitting he got my vote!

“I think he’s been consistently great since he came to the club, even when asked to play in different positions he’s taken to it like a duck to water.

“I’m looking forward to getting back to playing alongside Callum, and I’m sure everyone will agree he’s a very deserving winner.”

Congratulations, Callum!
