Leon McCann wants Airdrie to produce the fireworks with a sparkling display against Clyde as the Diamonds aim to get their league form back on track.

The sides meet this weekend having both lost to Dumbarton in the last seven days, and defender McCann knows that Airdrie must improve their performance to get back to winning ways.

“We know we can play miles better, but to be fair we had enough possession and certainly enough chances to win the game.

“Defensively we were poor, which is unusual for us, but we know what we need to do to rectify it with a big performance and result on Saturday.”

McCann was unfortunate to turn the ball past his own goalkeeper to give Dumbarton a crucial second goal, but that wasn’t enough to take the shine off an impressive run of displays from the 20-year-old, who was voted October’s Player of the Month by Airdrie fans on social media.

The former Hamilton youngster is more interested in his performances benefitting the team.

“Personally I think I’ve been decent but I try not to read too much into awards, I just want to focus on myself - playing as many games as possible and doing well for the team.

“The own goal was a bit unfortunate, but these things happen!”

With three matches played in this season’s shortened League One campaign, the Diamonds have three points on the board after a win and two defeats.

McCann knows there is work to be done to catch the early pace-setters.

“Obviously Cove Rangers have started very well, which is maybe a bit of a surprise to some people after coming up from League Two, so we do have some ground to make up.

“If we’re going to have a chance of challenging for the title, we ideally want to close that gap before we meet them at the end of the month, and we’re looking to start that on Saturday against Clyde.”

Danny Lennon’s men have had a similar start to the Diamonds, recording an impressive win over Partick Thistle on the opening day before slipping to defeats against Peterhead and Dumbarton.

The Bully Wee will be making the short trip to Airdrie in determined mood, and McCann expects an entertaining 90 minutes.

“Clyde are a good side - like us, they like to get the ball down and play.

“We need to get back to playing the way we did against Peterhead and Stenhousemuir, and there’s no reason we can’t do that. If we do what we do best, I’m sure it will be a good game and I’m confident we can get the three points.”

Manager Ian Murray wants the Diamonds to repeat last season’s form over the Broadwood side.

“Both sides go into it looking to bounce back from defeats against the same team, which is unusual.

“We had a good record against Clyde with three wins out of four last season, but we know in this league - especially at the moment - we need to be on our game to win.”

Ally Roy (wrist) and Max Currie (self-isolating) continue to miss out for Airdrie.
