McCabe bolsters Diamonds midfield

Rhys McCabe is the latest player to agree terms on a contract with the club following a spell with Queen of the South.

28-year-old central midfielder McCabe began his career at Rangers before joining Sheffield Wednesday for a three year spell in which he made 30 first-team appearances.

A return north saw Rhys turn out for Dunfermline Athletic before featuring for Sligo Rovers and St Patrick’s Athletic in Ireland.

With three Scotland under-21 caps to his name, Rhys brings an impressive pedigree to the Diamonds midfield.

Agreeing a deal at the Penny Cars Stadium this morning, he told airdriefc.com: “I’m delighted to finally get this sorted out and over the line after a couple of weeks of talks.

“I’m looking forward to helping the team push on this year - hopefully we can go one better and achieve promotion to the Championship.”

Manager Ian Murray was pleased to add another important squad member.

“We’re delighted to get Rhys - he’s the kind of central midfielder that we’ve been crying out for for a long time, and he’ll complement Scott Agnew very well.

“The spine of our team is coming together, and the experience Rhys had gained playing down south and in the Championship will be valuable for us.

“He’s a lovely footballer and a good passer of the ball who can get up and down the pitch. It’s a good signing for us and hopefully another statement of intent as we prepare for the upcoming season.”
